Resilience, Environment and Humanitarian Aid (#REHA) Organization has successfully conducted a Roundtable Discussion on Environmental Issues and Humanitarian Action in Afghanistan on the occasion of World Environment Day on 5th June, 2023 in the campus of ACBAR.

The objective of this event was to bring the attention of all pertinent partners and stakeholders to the issues of environment, climate change, water, sanitation and hygiene, (WASH) and food security and agriculture, which has been overlooked and neglected in the last two years.

The event provided a platform for stakeholders from various organizations, including NGOs, CSOs, UN agencies, universities, individual experts, and government, to discuss the pressing issue of environmental degradation and pollution, and its impact on the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan. We also explored the ways in which humanitarian crises put pressure on environmental resources, emphasizing the urgent need for coordinated action to address these challenges.

We had the pleasure having 60 participants joined us for this important conversation, and we thank each and every one of them for their valuable contributions. The insights shared and ideas discussed will help us work towards finding solutions to develop and implement environmental initiatives to cope with humanitarian challenges in Afghanistan.

In this discussion 60 participants attended including relevant stakeholders as following:

• UN Agencies – UNAMA, FAO, UNICEF.

• NGOs – DRC, NRC, Afghanaid, FGA, COAR, CWSA, CHA, AREA, SERO, TLO.

• Government – NEPA, MAIL, ANDMA.

• Academia – professors from Kabul and Sharq Universities.

• Experts and Youth – individuals.

We remain committed to our mission of promoting resilience, protecting the environment, and providing humanitarian aid to those in need. We thank our partners, participants, and supporters for their continued trust and support in our work. Together, we can create positive change for the people and the planet.

REHA experts moderated and facilitated the discussion sessions on those topics with stakeholders and partners in order to express their views, feedback and suggestions with solutions. They insisted that there are close and strong interlinkages and correlation among climate change, environment, WASH, food security and agriculture and asked for serious attention to projects and interventions on environmental and climate change issues.

They have suggested to discuss the issues of climate change and environment in higher levels with stakeholders to find solution to not further neglect it and pay timely attention. The perception is, if climate change and environmental issues overlooked further than it was in the last two years, they will aggravate current humanitarian crises and cause new emergencies and crises.

For more details, REHA will release its written report in coming days.
